What Is an Exhibition General Contractor? (vs Stand Builder vs PCO)

An exhibition general contractor is the single company responsible for designing, building and managing an entire exhibition or trade show floor — from the floorplan and stand construction to logistics, signage, exhibitor services and on-site coordination. In the United States the role is called a general service contractor (GSC); in Europe it is usually the "general contractor" or "official contractor" of the show.

What does an exhibition general contractor do?

The general contractor is appointed by the show organiser and acts as the operational backbone of the exhibition. A full-service general contractor typically covers:

• Floorplan design and mark-out — designing the show layout, allocating stands and marking positions on the venue floor.

• Exhibitor manuals and onboarding — the rules, deadlines and order forms every exhibitor works from.

• Stand construction — shell scheme packages for standard booths and custom stand design and build.

• Technical services — electricity, water, compressed air, rigging, AV, IT and WiFi ordered per stand.

• Signage, artwork and feature areas — wayfinding, hall numbering, sponsored items and special builds like lounges and stages.

• Logistics and build-up coordination — move-in and move-out schedules, supplier coordination and venue liaison.

• Health & safety compliance — keeping every stand and supplier compliant with venue and local regulations.

• On-site floor management — a service desk and floor managers during build-up, show days and breakdown.

• Reporting — real-time order and progress reporting for the organiser, increasingly including sustainability reporting.

General contractor vs stand builder vs PCO

These three roles are often confused, but they sit at different levels of an event:

• A stand builder designs and builds one stand for one exhibitor. It works for that exhibiting company, not for the show as a whole.

• A PCO (professional congress organiser) runs the congress itself — registration, scientific programme, hotels and delegate logistics — on behalf of an association.

• A general contractor owns the exhibition floor. It is appointed by the organiser or PCO, builds and manages the whole exhibition, and delivers services to every exhibitor at the show.

In practice the three collaborate: the PCO or association organises the congress, the general contractor runs the exhibition floor, and individual stand builders deliver custom stands for exhibitors within the general contractor’s floorplan and regulations.
